In the last tab, Alive or not Alive, there were a series of pictures depicting both living and nonliving things/organisms. It isn’t always easy to decide whether or not something is living. There are many characteristics that all living things have in common. All living things are/can:
·Composed of cells-
Cells are
the basic unit of life, and the smallest thing that is considered
alive
· Able to reproduce-
This includes both sexual (two parent units form the offspring) and asexual (a single
parent produces an offspring) reproduction.
·Based off of a genetic code-
All information an organism needs is found in the genetic code called DNA
·Able to grow and develop-
Each organism has a set pattern of growth and development that the
organism follows
·Obtain and use materials and energy-
When organisms obtain materials and energy it allows them
to grow, develop, and reproduce. Metabolism is the chemical reaction that breaks
down materials.
·Respond to their environment and surroundings-
All organisms respond to stimuli’s in their environment.
·Maintain a stable environment-
The process of keeping consistent conditions inside their body is called homeostasis.
·As a group they can evolve, or change over time-
Theory of evolution; organisms evolve to survive.
